Steve has always been in love with tattooing since a young age. Being around it growing up and having two uncles who tattooed helped propel that desire. After nearly ten years removed from art, he picked up painting and quickly landed an apprenticeship right here in Portland. After a few years of tattooing he opened his first shop on Congress Street and the following year he decided to open Dark Harbor in Portlands Old Port. Specializing in black work of all forms, Steve still loves to put bright bold colors on clients and can adjust to almost any style. On his time off he enjoys helping with and putting on local fundraisers, traveling in and out of country, and spending time with his wife and daughter.
Big Mike has been drawing tattoos on his body since he could hold a marker. After graduating from Parsons School of Design, he worked many years as an illustrator and designer. At 40 he got his first full sleeve tattooed…. one thing led to another, and he began an apprenticeship to be a tattoo artist and began tattooing people in 2013.
He works in a variety of styles, although he most enjoys doing Japanese and American traditional tattoos as those styles closely mirror the work he did as an illustrator. He joined Dark Harbor in June of 2018. He spends his free time hanging out with his family, drawing, and enjoying the outdoors.
Joshua was born and raised right here in the state of Maine. Graduating from Winslow high school in 2006, and from Husson University in 2010, Joshua has always been a creative artist with no real outlet. He began looking for apprenticeships while in college, however it was not until 2014 that he landed his first job as a tattoo artist after completing an apprenticeship in the central Maine area. After working in a a variety of shop throughout the state, he began tattooing in Portland Maine at Dark Harbor Tattoo Society when they opened in 2018. Black and Grey is his preferred style, however he is a versatile artist. A musician, a fitness enthusiast, and he enjoys playing pool when he is not drawing, tattooing, or spending time with his loved ones.
Nick was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A down south boy with high energy who is always ready for anything that comes his way. He started tattooing in Northern Alabama after completing his apprenticeship and has been tattooing since early 2016. After tattooing in the south for a bit, Nick decided to head up North to Maine where he worked at a few shops until landing a spot at Dark Harbor Tattoo when they opened in 2018. He prefers to tattoo Neotraditonal, traditional and super heavy blackwork style tattoos. Nick likes to volunteer at his local animal shelter and spending time with his fiancé and animals when he isn’t blasting new designs onto people’s skin.
Nick Holes, originally from Long Island NY, has been interested in body modification for as long as he can remember. While finishing up his bachelors degree in business management, he received an opportunity he couldn’t refuse. After a whirlwind apprenticeship, Nick starting piercing in early 2005. Piercing in multiple shops over the course of 8 years, he decided it was time to make a big move. In early 2013, he started piercing along the midcoast of Maine. Nick joined the Dark Harbor crew when they opened in June 2018. Nick enjoys performing all piercings, especially large gauge cartilage projects. When not piercing, you can find Nick furthering his piercing education, or enjoying all the nature Maine has to offer.
